I don't see how a hotter spark would burn fuel more efficiently, even if raising the battery voltage would produce a hotter spark...

Bingo! The spark either reliably lights the fuel mixture or it doesn't. So much rubbish is talked about ignition systems affecting power output. All rubbish.

It's like saying your steak will cook better if you light your barbecue with a bigger match!

Well what he says is partly true
If you buy one, that's £50 you wont have to spend on petrol! That's an impressive saving even before you've wired it up!    
Also, if you wired it to the battery in sequence with your balls, I reckon you could double the 'load' produced?
