Laptop help needed.
« on: 23 December 2010, 18:08:29 »

When the Mrs turns her laptop  on the screen doesn't light up. You can see the login page faintly & everything else seems ok apart from the screen doesn't light up. Any help greatly appreciated. TIA.

Sounds like the back light may have gone.

there is a trasformer in the bottom part of the screen it dose the back light check that, will need to take the screen cover off, replacments dont cost alot ruf about £6 if common one.

70% Likely to be the inverter which is normally at the bottom of the screen. Cheapish to buy normally (prices starting from a few quid on ebay)

15% Chance of it been the LCD screen itself (faulty backlight tube, bad solder joint on the end of the tube, or the HV wire insulation has broken down and its arcing to the metal chassis of the screen.

10% Chance its the screen cable that’s got a broken wire in it.

5% Chance its the Motherboard at fault - ie not sending the signal to the inverter to 'turn on'

Another possible cause could also be a faulty switch which detects when the laptop screen/lid is closed.

If the switch is jammed, then the inverter wont turn on (No point backlight been on if screens shut - so turns it off to save battery power)

Hope that helps
