I'm curious - did anyone privately or publicly think Cable wished Rupert Murdoch had greater control of BSkyB? because as far as I remember it was fairly common knowledge - so whats changed? a politician has a private meeting with two members of the public in which he expresses private views, now those 2 members turn out to be undercover journalists and hes stitched up like a kipper, so a politician with convictions who openly tells the truth and doesnt sit on the fence is pilloried - i would rather 10 Vince Cables in the cabinet than one Osborne. :o

I don't think telling the truth (such as it is or indeed can be as there are few absolute truths) can be helpful on every occasion.

I think Cable slipped up because he was taken by the moment while in the company of these young women.

I think it was a fundamental lapse in judgement as one needs a different mind-set when in government where sometimes one's natural inclination to expound on the details of sensitive matters must be suppressed.

The truth such as it is (or can be) is a capricious beast as the majority of people can't deal with it or will try and judge it by their own standards whatever they may be - what was the line from that film with Jack Nicholson, "The truth?, you can't handle the truth", although I may be wrong with the precise wording of the quote.

I think we can see from the WikiLeaks episode that sometimes it's inadvisable to start revealing the 'truth' behind (in that case) the obfuscation of current diplomacy as the full effects of these revelations have still to be assessed so, by revealing his true feelings on the NewsCorp move on BSB, he simply revealed too much to people who were not privy to the details of what was a very important and sensitive issue then being considered by a government department.

Point is Bamjax - he is the business secretary.He should judge each business proposal of this type on its own merit, objectively and without prejudice, purely from a business viewpoint. He didnt and he got carried away by his own ego, by boasting about it in front of 2 pretty young girls. The Telegraph must have at least suspected that they would be the type who could loosen his tongue. Theres no fool like an old fool.
If the influence of Murdochs empire is to be looked at by the govt. it may be more within the remit of the culture secretary, who would then report to the whole cabinet and the PM.
He went way beyond, his powers in not only starting a secret one man war against Murdoch, but was then stupid enough to boast about it when he had a honey trap sprung on him.;
Its not about wether Murdoch is good or bad/ right or wrong, its about the fact that by any reasonable measure - Cable and his huge ego and poor judgement are not fit for high office.
I think Murdoch needs to be curtailed, but that doesnt excuse this egomaniac thinking that as soon as he gets a sniff of power he can take it upon himself to be judge, jury and executioner, with no due process.
He boasted to the 2 girls that he was having a war with Murdoch and was going to win. It looks like he was more wrong than he could possibly imagined.

the decision will now be in the hands of the "H"ulture Secretary Jeremy *unt. a man who's publicly supported Murdoch and his empire.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/hunt-ruling-will-be-open-to-legal-challenge-after-past-murdoch-support-2167512.html
so no conflict there then  ;D ;D ;D ;D

More Lib Dems been "recorded " today.

Telegraph = Torygraf?

Could this be a Tory plot from the top to oust the Lib Dems or am I just too suspicious of everything nowadays!!

the Torygraph has never been happy with the coalition and breaking it up then forcing another election with the LibDems support destroyed would give the tories a shot at outright leadership.

You're wise to be suspicious ;D

Seems like a good idea to me. :y the Tories arent much use, but the Limpdems are way beyond useless. ;)
I do agree btw, that the Torygraph is doing it for those reasons. :y
