I always wanted a go in one of those!

Heck, I'd love a go in anything with that much power weighing so little  :y

I drove one of the road versions that a friend had bought a couple of times.  It frightened me more than anything else I have ever driven.

I think I'm right in saying the engine from that later appeared in the Jaguar XJ220.

The bloke across the road had one as a rally car until last year, replaced it with a stunning mk1 RS 1600 escort.
I used to be part of the recovery crew for the big rallycross meetings at Lydenn hill. We picked up the remains of Will Gollops 650bhp 6r4 after this accident. It was on an 8 wheel lorry with a big hiab, so we also had room to put Gary Bakers RS200 (who Gollops caught on the ricochet) on the back as well

Correct.
Tom Walkinshaw-developed 3.5 L V6 based on the engine used in the Austin Metro 6R4 rally car and fitted with twin Garrett T3 turbochargers, generating 542 bhp (404 kW; 550 PS) of maximum power at 7000 rpm and 476 lb·ft (645 N·m) of torque at 4500 rpm

The joys of the old 'A' Class Rallying...

Some awesome machinery was brewed during for that class...  Cars that not only looked unusual and stunning, but, the insane power to back the styling...

Me too.

My first RAC as a 4 yr old was in 1981. My uncle had dragged me and one of my cousins around the feezing cold forests of the North.

All the cold, hunger, lack of sleep, missing my mum etc, was soon forgotten the moment Toivonen appeared in the Sunbeam Lotus and Vatanen in the Escort.  No-one else was as sideways or as commited as those two.

I was lucky enough to have an Uncle who bunked me off school for a week each November to take me to watch my hero's doing battle. I only stopped going when it became the crappy Rally GB from a very small section of Wales.

Awesome  ;D

Is there any truth to the rumour of the rally cars being quick enough to qualify for the F1 at the time?
