paddle shift query
« on: 13 January 2011, 18:33:29 »

hi guys,

these flappy paddle jobbies.... can the flappy paddle mode be switched off and put into normal automatic mode (in 'D' and go!!!)?????

so if you can, would the car such as a ferrari or aston martin be as fast in automatic (with the sports or race button on) as it would be in paddleshift mode???

discuss......

Hasn't this been asked before quite recently?
Auto boxes with flappy paddles can be either a manual box underneath with electrickery controls or an auto box with the ability to change ger manual with a flappy paddle. Both have the option to leave it in auto & let the car do itself, or doing it yourself with the flappy paddles, even so, they'll both still do a certain amount for themselves ie if you drive in 4th gear and then stop - it'll change down to 1st ready for the off.
Any such cars will be as fast whether in auto or whether you do the change cos it'll still be one of the above types of gearboxes whatever mode it's in.

you asked "would it be as fast", which means would the top speed be the same. Well, probably not, as most flappy-paddle jobbies are actually normal auto gearboxes underneath. At the end of the day, the hydraulic gubbins does sap some power, so there'll be less available to overcome aerodynamic drag.

Now, if you really wanted to ask "will it accelerate as well", then it might just do that. By using "D" and accelerating using kick-down, then you can guarantee that it will upshift at peak revs, rather than using your judgement as if you were using the paddles. Mind you, the power curve would have to be the right shape for this - sometimes there's better acceleration available if you upshift at lower engine speeds
