Extract from Lexus FAQ's
« on: 13 January 2011, 18:35:37 »

Can I leave my Lexus Hybrid Drive vehicle for an extended period of time, while on holiday for example, without having to recharge the battery?

As with all vehicles, if left for an extended period of time without use, especially in severe weather conditions, it may need recharging. However, in the unlikely event that the battery discharges completely, the petrol engine will start the car. :-?

Lexus Hybrid Drive technology then ensures that the advanced compact battery will be efficiently re-charged as you drive. At cruising speeds, the generator will convert surplus engine power into electricity. And when decelerating, regenerative braking ensures kinetic energy is intelligently captured and converted into electricity to recharge the battery.

to me, that implies that the car can be started in petrol mode if the battery is empty, assuming it has an ordinary battery like our cars, seperate from the hybrid batteries

i dont think it means it'll just jump to life when there's no one about :y

lol

yeah i think it just means that you can start it in normal petrol mode if the electric half of the car has died.

two questions though...

why would you want a lexus? and why would you want a hybrid? lol

I think it was a token gesture towards hybrid which got it a whacking great tax break in the USA, I think the battery would just about run a mobile phone

In my Prius there is a 12 volt auxiliary battery in addition to the 200v (approx) traction battery.

The traction battery isn't designed to start the car in the event of the auxiliary battery being discharged as there is no conventional starter motor to spin the ICE - having said that my Prius is used infrequently and I have never encountered a problem with either traction battery or auxiliary battery discharge, even when I experienced temperature lows of negative 15C during the spell of bad weather recently.

You'd have thought that even an expert would have known that the terminals were +12v and 0/zero volts  ::) ::) ::)
