As some of you may know, I am looking for a new Omega to replace my 1995 model.

I have located an 02 2.6CD auto with 18k on the clock (yes, 18k), with leather, for £3995. Apparently, it's an ex-demonstrator with just one later owner. As I understand it, though, it's only ever had one service in its lifetime.

I may go and view but, before I do, I thought I'd seek the views of forum members.

Although the mileage is low, the price seems high. Personally I wouldn't pay over the odds for a low mileage car as a well-maintained one will do 200k without much difficulty so the difference between 20k and 60k is barely relevant.

I hope it's had more than one service, even though the mileage is low it's now 5 years old and servicing goes on time as well as mileage. It should have had the timing belt changed after 4 years, and just about everything else should have been changed several times by now (coolant every 2 years, brake fluid every 2 or 3 depending on who you listen to, oil+filter every year, etc).

If it is an ex-demonstrator it probably has a lot more toys than a standard CD.

£4k is too high, using the negotiating point of all the servicing that will be required, including a cambelt kit urgently!

I would say just over £3k personally.

Parkers give £4160 for independent dealer and £3960 for private good, with mileage of 40k. Doesn't include the leather interior, so I don't think the price is too far out.

It's not an ideal situation, obviously, but it's not done enough miles to have taken any serious damage, I'd say. If it runs OK and is not making any nasty noises I'd buy it, but I'd be changing the oil and filter and cam belt and tensioners asap, and certainly before giving it any stick. Give it a couple of changes of cheap oil to ensure any crud has been removed and check the breathers are clear and it's good to go.

It is a very good bargaining point, though.

That will be a nice car, don't worry about the servicing, the young engine will forgive you.
I would always haggle the price as much possible but if it is a car that i would like i would even pay the full price.

If you really fancy this car, dont let yourself be put off by thinking you might get it a bit cheaper. A low mileage, late plate omega is going to become pretty rare soon, and you'll kick yourself if you let it go.
I, personally, dont care too much about 'book' prices, if the car is worth it to YOU, go for it mate, and good luck.

Unusually I find myself agreeing with Steve. I have an 03 CD with 46k and no leather and I'd be upset if I priced it at £4k and was offered £3k

As others said I don't see a major problem with the lack of service in this case, but I would be concerned that someone that does not bother to servicing his/hers car may also neglect it in other ways.... for example old coolant may spell oil cooler trouble after 5 years even in a new engine, not to mention brake fluid etc... I suggest that you have a closer look, and if you are happy with what you see and you agree the price then go for it...

I just never pay anywhere near the asking price, especially when there is so much to bargain with.

Bound to be an old person with that mileage, back and forth to the post office and then down to the supermarket for 9am (where they can then spend 3 hours doing the shopping and winding everyone else up with their lack ok awareness and conrtrol of a trolley!!)
