Anyone watch this programme last night on I think ITV?
Some interesting facts included 1 in 9 cigarettes in Britain are smuggled. Smuggling costs the treasury an estimated loss of £2Bn every year.
They had one HGV X ray machine at Harwich (if I remember correctly). Why not have one at every port and make most vehicles drive through?
Why not employ more people to ease the drugs misery inflicted on Britain (which is the destination of choice in Europe for smuggling) ? Ex Navy folk could keep their hand in around our shores. Ex Army folk used to looking for bombs and suspicious folk could be employed on customs jobs. They could then be re employed if needed in the armed forces in the future.
Why do they let smugglers off with light or no sentence.? I did like the seizing of vehicles. 5000 cars last year.
Yes, you'd think being an island nation that we would have a head start on controlling access to it.
Then, as in most avenues of officialdom, the half-arsed way seems to the method of choice.
It is an example however of how making legal the supply and distribution of (presently) illegal drugs would not help to eradicate criminal behaviour in this field.
Irrespective of the legalities involved where the availability of any of the commonly used drugs from the alcohol, tobacco or recreational families are concerned, there will always be criminal behaviour evident in their availability and distribution for use.
