they have been doing that for years,, if phone or laptop is mobile then its tracked. there was a few car fitted with them as well tracked were you drove to how long and what road you were on. even bank card track you what you buy etc. it what is normal now...

My Android phone can do that too, but I have to enable it iirc.

Afaik on iphone's it's default for the gps data to be on. 

I've seen quite a few people upload pictures of their car taken from an iphone then blank out their plates only for the gps data to be embedded in the exif data, this then takes 2 clicks for anyone to find out the exact location of the picture, often the home address.

Sounds like they are all at it.

Remember when Google earth cars were driving round, they were also collecting data from wireless modems whilst on route. :-/

Old news, the BBC were, as always, slow to jump on what the rest of the world has known about for months.

For those concerned with privacy, it doesn't make a great job of it, plus it records the position of the masts, not the phone. Anyone working in the industry will know these are always wrong!
