Foreign aid
« on: 18 May 2011, 23:52:55 »

In the light of Cameron's apparent pledge to enshrine in law our foreign aid contributions, I found this most interesting:

The mistake the West made was giving something for nothing. The secret of China’s success is that its foray into Africa is all business. The West sent aid to Africa and ultimately did not care about the outcome; this created a coterie of elites and, because the vast majority of people were excluded from wealth, political instability has ensued.

China, on the other hand, sends cash to Africa and demands returns. With returns Africans get jobs, get roads, get food, making Africans better off…..It is the economy that matters.

A most thought-provoking blog post.  :y

In relation to the incumbent at 10 Downing Street, the following comment is quite apropos as we haven't had one in there for more years than I care to remember.

We need a man of courage and conviction.

To enshrine in law a system that has been open to systematic abuse for years is ill-advised to say the least and indicates to me that those charged with governing this country have lost the credibility needed to do so.

In such writings, Dellingpole is as qualified a journalist as many out there at the moment.

I agree with the overall sentiment but I watched a programme on TV fairly recently about an African state (can't remember which one) with a "modern Chinese railway system". Problem was it didn't work. They either didn't have the knowledge or money or parts to keep the locos running.
