Any BT / Ex BT Engineers / Data Comms on line
« on: 26 May 2011, 17:29:07 »

Currently helping out on a Cat5e job at the moment and have been asked if I can help out with a 50 Pair tie link from the Basement and 7th floor tomorrow as BT have let them down. 20 years ago could have done this with my eyes closed but not really done any real telecoms work for a while, I need the following color code confirming please.

50 Pair, from memory 2 lots of 25, so from BT's Box conn Krone strips first 5, white/blue, orange, green, brown, slate after that next 5 pair red, then black, yellow, violet etc, correct?

Then I need to patch from the top floor Box conn to 2 lots of 24 port Cat5 Patch Panels (yes I know only 48) for analog only cct's, again from memory analog pair 1 white / blue and digital pair 2 white orange, so my analog pairs goes to white /blue only on the RJ45 Panel?, so each pair on the panel will be -

BT (a) white blue - normally pin 5 to pin 5 on Patch Panel
BT (b) blue white - normally pin 2 to pin 4 on Patch Panel

Is this correct, or have I totally got it wrong.

Thanks Chris.  :-/

The colour codes vary depending on cable type (internal/external) and age, but most internal type would be as you suggest. Sometimes, rather than wrapping in 5 pairs, the white becomes the colour of the wrap, sometimes it stays white.

If its concentric cable, you may lack any identification of each set - this starts in middle and goes out clockwise.

Patch panel can vary again, as 3 different standards. 586b is most common IME.  Cat5 patch panels seem overkill if your not Cat5'ing them. BCs are much, much cheaper, and smaller.

Thanks Jamie, I see what 50 pair arrives tomorrow, as the Customer has ordered it in, worst case I'll follow the colour code mentioned if it allows.

As for the Cat5e Patch Panels for voice only, agreed a bit overkill, I did mention normal Voice Panels would do but again thats what they've ordered. the Panels will sit in the same rack as the structured floor panels so they can patch through the Analog 50 pair to the required floor ports.

The bit I really couldn't remember was which pins on the Cat5 panel was for 2 pair for voice so going with the white blue (5 and 4 on the Cat5 Panel).

Strange thing is the Fibre and Switch is already in, but I cant see anywhere on there plans how their going to present them to the floor panels, got a funny feeling there going to ask me to do that at some stage as there supposed to be going live next week!

most cat5e patch panels are colour coded now, making it foolproof ;D... ...BUT ensure it matches your other infrastructure (likely to be 586b)
