Techie question about email
« on: 02 July 2011, 21:25:06 »

Some bostard is using my domainname to send unsolicited junk mail.....i know coz im getting all the bounce backs (getting about 10 a day for the last week, coz i capture all emails sent to my domainname)

Is there anything i can do about?
I know i could switch off 'capture all' but that doesnt solve the problem of peeps getting junk email appearing to come from my domainname

Any advice?

Cheers

Not really, but popping an SPF on your domain will help ensure they don't get through to their destination, thus they might stop using your domain and move onto someone else.

Anybody can sent a mail apparently from anyone else, SPF if there so the recipients mail server hopefully rejects it.

Some people send "Message not delivered" type messages to try and get you to read them like any other spam.

If they are genuine (they should refer to emails in your SENT folder) then someone is using your actual email account to send stuff, in which case you need to change your password at the very least.

Worth putting in an SPF anyway. Some mail servers are starting to turn on automatic rejection if there is no SPF in place.

Its quite easy if you have full control of your DNS (or enough control to add the txt record). MS have a good little step by step wizard at http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/safety/content/technologies/senderid/wizard/

Just been having a look at that wizard.....and not too sure about what to tick.....
My setup is mail that get sent to my domainname gets redirected to my isp's mailbox. Mail I send gets sent from my isp's outbound mail server (with my domainname set as the return address)

I also use gmail on my bb, but gmail is set to send emails via my isp, so i guess that doesnt complicate matters.

So im guessing that i need to set the mx records for my domainname as the incoming mailserver and my isp's outgoing mailserver for the outbound mail ?
