I have a largish 9" angle grinder...every time I have to remove the disc to put the new one on I'm having serious difficulties getting the old disk off, even after its cooled down...I have the locking tool and the tool to unscrew the top part...but its stuk solid, then suddenly sometimes it just easily turns...any thoughts on what I may be doing wrong?? Or what I can do to ease removal?? TIA

thats normal, just tap it with a hammer and it will loosen off easy enough

also dont tighten it as hard as you can it shouldnt not come loose

Brick dust on the threads? I found the killer was cutting a steel section that closed up and stalled the grinder

I have destroyed the locking pin on my 9" grinder trying to remove old discs. I had to grind an open ended spanner down to make it thin enough to fit behind the disc to hold the shaft 

I now just fit the nut finger tight. If I have more trouble I might try candle wax in the threads.

Could be some thing to do with the disc getting hot as said don't overtighten the threads on the locking nut are usually cut in the opposite direction to rotation so it will self tighten if it was to loose

that happened on my 6" circular saw then the thread went on the allum key, i ended up throwing it away i got so fed up trying to undo it

I have a REALLY big hammer...how hard do I hit it and where and how? 

I only tighten it finger tight anyway...would some lubricant help it do you think??

just tap the end of the spanner till it loosens

but hold the disc at the same time

Use the spindle locking tool and as you try to slacken the front lock nut have someone lightly tap the end of the spindle (NOT the tool) and it will readily give way. If you try to do it when the disk is hot it will have tightened due to expansion.
Always only fasten the new disk on just beyond finger tight, I do and they have never come loose while using it. Try a bit of coppaslip on the threads too but keep it away from the disk centre.

Put some oil on it and finally managed to knock it loose with a hammer and screwdriver to knock the locking nut round...

I had a proper look at it at this point as its second hand from a car boot sale...works perfectly but a pain to get the old disc off every time...not surprising it seems as the bit on the spindle holding the disc in place behind the disc was on upside down so the grooves designed to lock into the spindle were not able to, so would have been rotating round when trying to turn the locking nut on the top...hopefully it will all be a lot easier now...
