Free speech under threat?
« on: 07 September 2011, 10:17:50 »

When singing Carl Douglas' 70s hit Kung Fu Fighting causes offence to a passing "man of Chinese origin" (see http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-13205220 ), you may wonder what is going on.

Dan Hannan covers this interesting point (and others) in this must-read post:

 :o :o ::) :(

Lets be honest now, in this country, if you disagree with the policys of the pc brigade, you are either a rasist, a sexist or a homophobe  >:( >:( >:(

The real question is ................ what do we / can we do about it ?  (genuine question)

No doubt some oof'ers on here will be thinking here we go again but its a genuine problem if you take your head out of the sand and look arount you  :(

It is frightening what has, and is happening. As to what can be done about it, I have little idea myself. Sadly I think more and more violence will occur.

Perhaps we are seeing the beginning of the end for our civilisation, a tad over dramatic maybe, but these things start somewhere.

Its the kids I feel for.
My lad is coming up to 16 years old.
Trouble is, he thinks "very un pc" like I do.
It's scary  :(

What is the UK going to be like in 20 years time ?

Do you think being PC will ever become a crime ? (full circle)

"Do you think being PC will ever become a crime ? (full circle)"

I don't think so, some parts of being PC are ok, for example lets respect each others beliefs. What is wrong is when one person's beliefs are put above another's beliefs, or it seen to be one person getting special treatment because of there beliefs. Then you get the problems of intolerance etc.

Like I said I don't know the answer, but I really wish those in power would do something to right the wrongs.

To be honest, I put that under respect for your fellow man / woman  :-/

One of the problems is you can't say no, thats wrong to these people  :(

For instance ................... about 10 years ago, my eldest went to school with a lad from across the road.
Not a bad lad but his mother is scum (in my eyes)
This lad was been picked on by other kids because of his dress style and attitude to other people.
My son used too stick up for him at school to the point that he was fighting his battles for him.

I had a word with his mother about what was going on and was told to break off so I told my son to let him look after himself if he was going to act the way he was.

2 days later, the lad goes into school with his hair bright purple and a bolt through his eyebrow  ::)
As playground law dictates, he was picked on even more  :( ::)

The next week, it is plastered all over the local paper (front page / pictures)  saying he is a victim of the system    >:( >:(

Now every kid in the area wants to kick his head in  ::)

His mother is demanding compensation and the school head is dismissed  >:( >:(

interesting post Nick and the Mark Steyn article is worth a read. I know that this is all old ground weve covered on here before but that doesnt mean that it isnt very relevant nor worthy of debate. There seems to be no "common sense" anymore does there re political correctness. For me its relatively straightforward. All those things that are inherent to an individual-things they cannot change-such as age/sex/skin colour/mental or physical disability should be protected from attack/abuse under law. Things like political or religious beliefs should not. They should be open to debate and disagreement. If someone wants to call someone else a t*at for being a christian or a muslim or a communist or a Man Utd supporter so what? Their arguments to support their views may be illogical , bigotted or even non existent. It shouldnt matter. Such crap justifications for a viewpoint should not warrant anyone getting upset. I personally would only say that the law should protect the"inherent"  aspects of an individual with a caveat that non-"inherent" beliefs should only be protected against incitements of violence or hate against them. This protection in law would not include challenges to those beliefs nor mickey taking of them!
I know that the reality isnt as simple as this-where, for example , would you draw the line regarding jokes-"sick" or otherwise -aimed at the "inherent" aspects of an individual/group such as age/sex/colour or disability? Personally, as long as their intent was not to incite hate/violence then I would not legislate against them. Surely most of us can figure out if we find them funny/sick/offensive or not. The moot point is that of "offensiveness" of course because we are all have different views on that. Maybe the "sticks and stones" attitude should be taken up-especially as you'll often find that those most easily offended by words are often those with he strongest opinions on other subjects! Quite often the best ****ist jokes come from the community concerned.

The best Irish jokes are by the Irish and so on.
