Fitting my lifters tomorrow.
« on: 28 July 2009, 21:51:04 »

I've been told to soak them in oil overnight, should I?

And any tips on how to pull the old ones out without scratching the head or with out using the sucker thing in the Haynes book of lies.

You can never ever have too many cylinders! As a minimum, you need at least more cylinders than doors!  :y  :y  :y

Do you need to run the new lifters in at all?

Was reading up the other day somewhere that if you need to fit new lifters, that you must fit a new camshaft, and then start the engine and vary the rpm between 2000-2500ish for 15 mins  :-?

I guess this is only on the old old engines? :-/

You can prime the lifters by submersing them in clean oil and pumping the centre piston a few times (until air stops coming out the hole).

Not essential though.....and you dont need to change the cam shaft.

Why new lifters though?

It was regarding old v8 blocks (push rods).

Basically, the top of the tappets are flat when new. Once 'run in' they are very slightly domed inwards, and this causes the tappet to spin round as the camlobe passes over it, and thus wears the lifter evenly.

But again, that was regarding old pushrods, and maybe isn’t relevant now.... :-?

Thats not right!

The lifters have a nitrile hardened coat as do the cam lobes....wear that sub micron thick coat off and they dont last long.

The bit that makes them turn is the fact the cam tip has a slight slope on them

The running in procedue use to be because there were still un-polished nitrile coats on the cam lobes...they certainly didn;t wear.

Why new lifters though?

Had a couple of knackered ones. Made it sound like a diesel.
How long would it normally take for them to quiet down fully? I didn't prime them.
