Because of a change of work place, I will be needing something more frugal than a 3.0 V6, as much as that disappoints me.

So I've been keeping an eye on all sorts of diesels local to me.

I would be looking at the diesel Omegas, but I'm put off by the fact it's described as a detuned BMW engine, and the 2.2DTi is even more asthmatic than the 2.5!

What attracts me is obviously I know the comfort levels are high and it's still RWD and handles reasonably well, but one thing I don't want is a car that struggles to overtake and has no proper grunt to it. I'm dubious that 125bhp could lug a big Omega about, let alone the 118bhp of a DTi.

What are people's honest experience/opinions on the diesel varient?

I've got a 2.5TD manual, it has no trouble keeping up. It's not got the grunt the 3.0 petrol has but it'll still move you about. If you can get a manual and speak to TB about chipping it back to BMW spec

I wouldn't rule out the 2.2 as well, I believe it has more torque than the 2.5

The 2.5TDs have bags of grunt - when they're 'on song'!

However, many suffer from poor maintenance in their early lives - remember, the newest of these are now approaching their tenth birthday!
Best to get a manual-boxed one, then chip it, (around 70 quid). Sends it back to BMW spec (plus 5%) to around 150BHP. Makes all the difference, much better low-down torque, and general driveability. Although you won't win any races, it'll then cruise at 75mph upwards all day long.
Running locally here, mine returns 33mpg constantly, with Mrs Sethsmate driving it like she stole it! (Obviously denied!).

Engine oil/filter-changes must be done every 4500 miles absolute max.

Incorrect. The 2.2 DTi has MORE torque than the 2.5TD. Considering it has 2 cylinders less, thats quite impressive.

The 2.5 will be smoother though.

You can get it back to BMW spec with a chip, but only do this if its a manual, auto's will have to have their box upgraded to the stronger AR35

2.5td ussually reliable if oil changed every 3000miles. i had 1 that covered over 351000 miles trouble free and that engine is still running in a different car somewhere in the midlands. make sure you get 1 that has service history or you'll end up with a sick one like my current one that is for sale.
the 2.2dti is same as 2.0dti but with a crank balancer. the pumps seem to fail before 120000 and cost a fortune to put right

My mistake, I was looking at the 2.2 bhp figures, not torque figures.

Chipping it sounds good, although being 22, any sort of "modification" to the engine would probably result in the insurance company laughing at me. Strange, when I can insure the 3.0 no problems.

I'll be keeping an eye out for them, anyway, although I'd like to pay under a grand and looking at other threads, I'll be lucky to get a good one for that at the moment.

Yep can only echo what's been said above, a 2.5TD chipped is the way to go, and make sure it's a manual.
Not many about now so if you see one go take a look quickly.

I have just bought a 2.5td saloon by far an awesome car for what it is, and has loads of grunt to overtake! Still interested in this chip though if somebody could give me more info? Ie it isn't one of these silly resistors that just advances the timing by 2 degrees? Otherwise i would rather see about re-mapping it.

no it isnt a resistor, its an IC that plugs into the ecu, dependent on year is whether its a straight plug in or a solder in job, of course as mentioned by others if its an auto youll need an AR35 g/box but if youve got a manual its strong enough to handle the extra ooooomph & believe me you get plenty more

Yeah mine is a manual that sounds better as it will be a different map that it uses so saves spending £200+ on a re-map. Anybody put me in touch with who it is that sells them?
