Car carpet cleaning
« on: 23 November 2009, 13:05:59 »

My miggys carpets I have just discovered are disgustingly filthy.  I'd not noticed until yesterday when i took the mats out and the carpet under those was spotless but the area round them was practically black, the seats are a bit on the grubby side too.

Anyone any suggestions for car carpet cleaner that actually works as i've tried several different types of stuff over the years and never really been that impressed.

Seeing how i've got all the leaks, rattles and pretty much everything else fixed on the car so that it's now driving ok I actually want to get it looking nice too,  could be spending a lot of time in it this winter if it's a cold and wet one, the motorbike will be going into storage.

On with the suggestions.

I have used 1001 carpet shampoo & Vax carpet shampoo in the past. Both did a great job.

I have got a Vax carpet cleaning machine now (bought it when my old dog started having accidents......) which does a good job but just as effective is to sponge solution on then vac it off quick with a wet & dry vacuum cleaner before it can soak in to the carpet backing..

Mine were from our local £ shop. Astonish, spray on and scrub, works well.
Yep £1 each.

Auto glym spot remover works without effort.About £12 a bottle but lasts for ages.Cleans, protects and smells nice.1 bottle has lasted me 2 years so far.Gets rid of blood, blackcurrant, mud, tea, tom sauce.Even removed in-bedded silicon sealer from the seats.
Don't have to soak the material, just a light spray, rub in with a damp sponge and wipe off with a clean cloth.

Used a vax carpet cleaner on mine, as well. The 'tank' type, (both wet & dry) is a great cleaner. Small cleaning nozzle, 1/2 litre fluid, and a nice warm day, real success!!! :y

I use Ariel or other clothes washing liquid-preferably wool and silk type, mixed with warm water and applied with a soft nylon bristle scrubbing brush to create a foam which I lift off with a wet and dry hoover, then wipe down with a clean damp teatowel or similar in the right direction to restore the texture/pattern.  Smells great too.

Any bobbles remove nicely with a mach3 razor, loose threads are snipped and frays are sealed back to the fabric with a lighter flame (check material type in an inconspicous place first!).
I recently turned around a high mileage knackered old hatchback with really doggy interior (gaffer tape best for this) into a showroom condition car inthe course of a whole day doing this.  Used to valet cars as a teenager!

Best done in the summer so car dries fully and does not mould after.

I just bought aa astra estate wich stank of dog and the interior was horrible I managed to get the upholstery looking half decent when i noticed some stains so i used some oxy cleaner i found in the missusis cupboard and the damn stuff brought up some thing nasty from well inside the foam of the seats. I had to let it all dry realy well before i gave the interior  another go with vanish foam cleaner and lightly rubbed all over the seats and carpets then vacuumed the lot. The seats look dood and the carpets too. Now the car stinks of vanish. I now have loads of air fresheners all over the place and with the smell of the vanish the pong is wier.
Can't win. Don't realy know what to do now. Vanish works very well but smells. :-/

Lose the air freshers and give the car a proper airing-drive with the heating on full and windows down in the back.

If damp, I put a bin bag over the back shelf and the dash and place loads of crumpled up newspapers on top to draw the moisture.

If you can't stand it after a few weeks, get a valeter to wet-vac the seats with plain warm water-chances are you have loads of detergent residue left and the air fresheners are making it even worse.

Good luck  :y

My solution ( I have very light brown seats) was to hire a professional carpet washing machine from a local laundry-shop. I suspected if it would make any good (I had tried practically everything to get the seats clean) and I was amazed! The interior, seats and carpets came out as new with only a few hours of work (of which most was spent trying to figure how to reach all the psots with the nozzle). The rent was around 20 EUR per day including detergent/soap/whateveritwas, not bad.
