OK, What makes this Carlton different from one I had in 1997?

Had the engine "fettled" by Lotus upto 377BHP, also had bespoke wheelarches, wheels and tyres & paintjob. Capable of 179 MPH. Cost £48k new.

Google for more info.

Very expensive to run, a pair of discs cost £600.

There is a dedicated following via the Autobhanstormers club - which you can also join with a 6 cylinder Omega.

Depends - what Carlton did you have in 1997?
If it wasn't a Lotus, then there are a whole bucket load of differences - engine (plus the addition of two turbos and charge cooler), ECU mapping, gearbox, propshaft, diff, brakes, electrics, interior, sound system, seats, wheels, brakes, body - have I missed anything out?
Still has the same awful dashboard as a 1.8 Li though! :o

Lotus 3.6 Twin Turbo engine..... back in the day, it was the fastest 4 door saloon in the world.

What was different from your Carlton? - About 200 bhp  ;D

I think it was actually classed as the worlds  fastest front engined saloon in its day till ferrari built a 4 seater (thats what they called it, but never had rear seats like the carlton)

Some forces possibly did.  Our plods has a lotus elite and a chevette HS, M25 ran stuff like the ford RS200.

lol Pedro you forgot the strengthened shell bits, as for plod using them never happened as they couldnt justify spending 48grand on a patrol car!!! closest they ever had to the L.C. was the twin turbo v8 rover vitesse, and they only had three of them!! one of which the chief inspector of thames valley at the
time ran out of talent on a country road and wrapped it around a tree, all vry hush hush at the time tho!!, Luckily i had a mate in the forces workshop who tipped me the wink where it was scrapped and managed to pick up the turbos manifolds inlets and oil pipes complete off it for a mere 3 hundred quid from the scrappy!!! can tell you it used to eat brakes(jag 4 pots) though which is probably why it was written off in the first place!!
Police were the loudest shouting opponents of the Lotus Carlton when it was introduced, and the adverts of the time were a bit of a shocker!! one said now you know why most porsches are bright red(embarassment) at being beaten by a 4 door salloon!! was quite funny!!

They did'nt use them cause of cost as G said, a lot of money. Exactly same reason why plod don't use BMW M5, they use 530d instead  ;)

At the time, they also signed the contract for a fleet of 24v Senators, which were much much cheaper, and still good for 150mph

One of the synical retorts to various police force comments about what a dangerous vehicle it was was that they were a little upset at having purchased slower Senator 24V machines... all became irrelevant anyway as the I99's negated the need for high speed pursuits.

BMW was said to be very upset that they had agreed to electronically limit cars to a max of 155 mph were necessary and GM/VX/Lotus didn't!

Wimps!

My answer to that is -what's the point of engineering a fast car then limiting it's potential?
Bit like coaching an 100m runner to the max............... then cutting a big toe off.
