Looking for a fault that wasn't there!
« on: 27 January 2010, 17:49:56 »

Have you ever thought you have a fault with the car but you haven't really, I'll explain.....

Just replaced the TD fuel filter and true to form the last time I did it I had to remove the whole thing, bracket and all. Anyway stuck some "Diesel Magic" in and replaced the filter bolted it all back up and took it for a blast down the road.
All working smoothly again now and it drives spot on but...............On my way back I stuck the headlights on, as it was getting dark and all the dash lights went out, well sort of dim.
What have I done to disturb the wiring for the dash I thought, well nothing but I still went under the bonnett just to check all the connections.
After a bit of fiddling with all the wires it suddenly dawned on me to check the dim dash lights control on the dash, next to the switch, yep sure enough that was turned to it's lowest setting :-[ :-X How did that happen.........well I had been cleaning the dash at the weekend and moved it ::) :-[ :-[....What a t***t I felt :y

Ever done anything like this before?

Mick ;)

made me laugh!!!
mate of mine rang up one day and said his td was belching smoke and had no power had i any ideas?
I said i cant get over but worse case scenario its the turbo, but before you condemn the turbo carefully check for boost leaks on the entire inlet system top to bottom!!
2 days later im over there to find him buried in the engine compartment, busily finishing off fitting his nice shiny new recon turbo, just in time he says its  ready for a test run, i got fred over the road to diagnose the problem and it was the turbo goosed as he took the top boost pipe off and revved the engine and there was no turbo pressure, definetly turbo gone he says so i bought this one!! ok i said but its a bit unusual to die without warning? so he jumps in the car and drives a whole hundred yards up the road with black smoke pouring out of the tail pipe!! comes back and i said did you forget to fit a boost pipe or connector? no he says ive done it all  properly!!
jack car up get underneath and check it all looks ok, so remove the large rubber gaitor covering the intercooler to find  the ic has a big split in it!!!! no wonder he hasnt got any boost at the inlet manifold!!! ;D

Reminds me of when I put the Westfield on the road. Its first outing was a bit of a disappointment. Accelerated OK but not quickly to 40 or 50 MPH, then started to lose power. Could be nursed up to 60 or 70 through the gears but full throttle at high revs just killed it.

I was scratching my head and remembered that I'd driven it round the car park at the SVA centre to bed in the brakes where it took off like a scalded cat.

After dicking around with the tuning for ages and pulling my hair out I remembered that I'd left the bonnet off when I was at the SVA centre. Sure enough, a quick blat with the bonnet off and it went properly.

In my haste to get it ready for SVA I'd not bothered to check the clearance between the air filters and the bonnet, and it had been somewhat strangled with the bonnet on. :-[

Oh oh oh .......

Some years back, when I was a shift fitter for our (huge) local National Bus Company subsidiary, I got called-out to a failed single-decker some 20 miles away from it's home depot.

The driver phoned-in to say that it had faded-out, stopped, and refused to start.
I took our tow-truck, and on reaching the failure, attempted to bleed the fuel system. I just couldn't get any fuel to the filters. Removed the front lower panel, then towed the offending bus 20 miles back to the depot. Changed the lift-pump, still no joy. Bugger, what can it be?

Turns out that there's no fuel in the effing tank ..... !!!!!
Ah well .............

Think we are all guilty of 'doh' moments.
Was setting the timing on the fiesta, turnin the bottom pulley with a 19mm as you do but the engine was really tight  and impossible to turn, so slackened the fan belt, no joy, removed the plugs, no joy, checked valve gaps-all ok, then it twigged, i'd left it in gear  >:(

Not quite car related, but my mate used to have a small speed boat which he and a friend rebuilt the engine on. It was never 100% reliable, it did have a habit of breaking down now and then.

Me and my mate took it to Poole for the day and it was a blast. Best thing was doing turns and jumping over the wake you'd just made. Done this loads of times, then did it one to many times, the boat landed with a thud and kerputt. Nothing. We had a crate of Stellas with us so just sat back and tucked into them.

After about an hour of this, and still not managing to attract anyones attention (although we weren't really trying) I happened to notice a red springy cord hanging from my mates belt buckle. I commented on how gay he looked with that hanging there, thats when he realised this was the kill key, you pull it out (or get knocked out of the boat) the engine dies. He put it back in and Brmmm, away we went!!!!

In all fairness to me, this was my first time on any sort of small boat so didn't even know they exsisted

A mate of mine bought a mini mottor but told me electric start dose not work but its ok its got a kickstart. The look on his face when i tried the electic starter with the left hand brake pulled in was as mastercard puts it ¬price less`. He has now stoped trying to tell me he knows more about bikes than me, his bubble can stay popt as i had ridan the mini motor he bought before it was for sale ;D
