Car jobs this weekend
« on: 03 April 2010, 19:43:31 »

I'm trying to get my Jag S-Type prepped to go back throught the MOT.  It only had a few 'ahem' minor jobs.

It's got double wishbone suspension I think (so top arm and bottom arm) and the lower ball joints failed on both front.  Spent a long time wrestling with bolts that were done up incredibly tight.  Resorted to resting the spanner on the jack head and raising it a bit at a time to get going on two of them  :-?

Lower rear wishbone removed this afternoon just in time for it to rain, so tools away and start again tomorrow.

Just read all the torques that Jaguar recommend and my Torque wrench only goes up to 50Nm - they're asking for 150Nm for each bolt that holds the suspension together!  That's f'in tight!

Got the upper rear wishbone on the other side to do when that arrives too - and that needs the hub to removed which is supposed to be at 410Nm.

I can't afford another torque wrench at the minute, so they'll just be getting a treatment of loctite and then done up (on the ground) as tight as I can get them.  I reckon if my back, elbow or shoulder goes 'click' then that'll be tight enough  :)

Still, quite a satisfying day all in all... now sat with beer and curry and looks like the kids might even go to bed on time  :y

Yes... yes... I should probably be banished to a Jag forum, but in hindsight I wish I'd held out for another Miggy rather than change to a Jag, and just looking at the mechanical advice and banter is much better and friendlier here.  There's far too much 'take it to the dealer' on the Jag forums.  :y :y

if you were closer could have borrowed my torque wrench  :(

This forum is one of the best around for a specific car, makes all others look rubbish!

You wanna try the MGRover forum - don't bother asking anything useful in there, the only threads that get answered are Radio/Amp threads, and chavvy bodykits ;D

Well that's it, hopefully...  Wishbone back on and tightened on the road (bloody tight squeeze for me under there!)  Nuts & bolts tightened to with an inch of my life and with any luck that'll be tight enough.  I might ask the garage to check the torque on them when it goes back in for MOT.

Unseized one calliper (hoping to not have to buy two new ones) and will do the other when the missus reappears with the jump leads as since I've had the boot open all yesterday and this morning it appears to have flattened the battery.  :-[

Still - Grand Prix (repeat - I only got to see start at 9 this morning) is coming.  Is it too early for beer?

Once all these jobs are done and the cars through it's MOT I'm in two minds whether to sell on (and get pennies) or hang on to it as I've 'invested' money in it now...  definitely be another miggy if I do get rid. :y  :y   I think this forum would be one of the major factors!
