Range Rover help
« on: 31 August 2010, 08:36:01 »

Anyone clued up on Range Rovers? A 2002 4.4 V8 taps after you lift off from revving it, it also had a flat battery and is now coming up with a suspension fault. Now I've found this car cheap, but need to know how much these faults will cost to put right. It's a good car full LPG conversion etc.

No idea about the tapping noise I'm afraid.
However;
After or during battery issues L322's throw false codes, I had the same with mine. Mine came up with HDC inactive.
What code does it say? Where is the suspension, same level, dropped down or pumped itself up to the highest possible? Extended mode by any chance?
How cheap's cheap? I reckon it'd need to be around £7000 to £8000 to be worth it, even if it's a Vogue with 60k miles or so.

Taps or knocks like big ends only quieter? If it's the latter then it could be the little ends, they usually rattle on lift off, IIRC.

No idea if this engine is particularly prone to it, but any load-related noise like that would send me running unless it was really, really cheap..

Been told it sounds like a cam follower, it had an oil change and it went for a short while, now it's returned.

Hmm.. hydraulic tappets on that engine? They usually tap constantly, not just on overrun - and little ends do sound quite a lot like hydraulic tappets.

Best thing would be if you can get an engine stethoscope on the engine and localise the noise, actually - it'll be easy to tell that way (assuming you can reach the relevant areas of the engine - head & block - without major dismantling!)

Any noise that's sensitive to load is more likely to be the bottom end of the engine  - as a rule because the top end is not subjected to load. Very difficult to say more without hearing it.
