The difference a service can make
« on: 28 September 2010, 18:50:29 »

My 2003 2.6 manual has steadily had all the usual things done to it to get it up to a decent standard.
Today I changed the spark plugs, but have previously done all the filters. Daz dropped the sump and gave it a clean out, then new oil and filter.
When looking at the plugs today bank 1-3-5 all had NGK plugs in, all rather black and tired looking. Bank 2-4-6 had NGK in 2 and 4 and GM in 6. In the service history there is a bill for a full service from VX including the change of all 6 plugs about 18 months ago. I was suprised to see NGK  in there, and plug 6 being GM. So I suspect VX didn't change them and just charged for it, and whoever put the NGK in, couldn't be bothered to do plug 6  ;D
Pretty poor I think, but after 6 new plugs fitted, I have noticed quite a difference, much better when starting and generally seems more responsive, albeit only very slightly.

I went through the history the other day and saw when the car had done 41k miles a replacement cambelt tensioner was fitted, but no mention of any other cambelt item at the same VX dealership.

When Daz did the cambelt the other day, both banks were 1/2 a tooth out and there appeared to be plenty of slack on the belt, so another thing that hadn't been done properly.

But after all of this MPG has increased from an average of 26.3 to 34.7, much smoother idle and just much better to drive. I know we all know the importance of keeping our vehicles serviced, but it really does make a difference.

I like to service mine myself & i change my oil between 1500-2000 miles on my DTi. Like wise with fuel filters etc, i change these every year despite the miles i don't do ;D
Regular services are something i've always been very keen on.
Spend a little & get much more in return :y :y

Glad your Migs alot better :)

He drives far too fast, sometimes going into double figures  :o  :D

You've been in a car with me driving enough, I drive normally  :D

Those figues were taken over almost all 16 gallons in the tank, or full to first click until fuel light starts to flash.

Exactly Pete, I wish more people thought that. I had a 3cyl 1.0 Corsa back today, again for more stuff to be done to it. Nothing has been touched on that car for the past 6 years, coolant was black and looked like frog spawn, plugs were crap along with all the filters. The owner has had it for a year and I asked when it was last serviced and checked over etc, she just shrugged her shoulders  ;D

I was pleased I managed 20.5mpg over the last tank of gas ::)

Mind you, it did get a spanking down to Hampshire on Saturday - yet again I was running late ::)

I assume that's the MV6?
;D when are you not running late? Even with a Bugatti Veyron you'd still be late.

Better get that time management course entered under your training needs at your next appraisal then!

I've yet to see you angry, I'll have to try harder next time. Maybe I'll 'forget' my radio security code again

I know what you really need; A rear view mirror based air freshener with a 'thought for the day' so you can always see it, revel in it's wisdom and always be calm  :y
