Chains or socks?
« on: 24 November 2010, 13:46:43 »

There has been a fair bit of chat here about winter tyres, snow chains etc.

Has anyone ever tried these:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Anti-Skid-Snow-Sock-Tyre/dp/B0049NKFSG/ref=sr_1_17?ie=UTF8&qid=1290606357&sr=8-17

If so, what was the opinion on them?

Not personally, but I know someone who used them on an MR2 - apparently they work amazingly well on snow & ice, but you must take them off as soon as you get to a treated largely clear road, otherwise they self destruct in a handful of miles.

Yep, was thinking the same, and most of the websites I've seen say that.

Also they say 'only required for drive wheels' - so we'll be able to get our Omegas moving, but won't be able to steer or stop very well :-/

Personally I'd get 2 sets and equip all 4 wheels.  :y

I prefer chains; especially on frozen snow and ice as they dig in and give amazing grip both for braking and starting off.....as for chains on the front; I`ve found that steering on snow is ok without chains, provided your Miggy has front tyres with deep treads. :y

*Many cars do not have sufficient clearances on full-lock to permit the safe use of chains on the front wheels without catching the metalwork/undercarriage etc.

Not to mention the fuel lines in the front offside wheel arch. :o
