WINTER Tires? NOKIAN... vs the rest?
« on: 11 December 2010, 04:00:30 »

Hey fellas... I come here for a quick advise...

The Neon is in the shop getting a new gearbox but in mean time we got to get the RAV4 read for winter.

With that comes the question... which winter tire is the best.

I am looking at a price range of 70-80$/tire

I can purchase the following...

NOKIAN NORDMAN 4

FIRESTONE WINTERFORCE

HANKOOK IPIKE 409

2K1 - CCS //Mods: K&N, Steinmetz Cat-back, Port/polish intake system, 3.8BAR FPR, 3.2L Injectors, MAF, V8 Brakes, GTO Springs, 194RWHP.

I have just been watching BBC news in astonishment, as they have been reporting on the subject of winter tyres.
British insurance companies have been responding to motorists fitting winter tyres by charging them up to 20% extra, as they consider this to be a modification. Some companies have even been refusing cover completely, as they dont cover modified cars. :o :o :o

 :) :) :) :y

#1 with studs , if you will be driving on icy hills definitely no competitor will be around.. with the drawback of them being really noisy (and a feeling of disturbance on steering) on dry and wet but much much better than any kind of chain..

#2, definitely ice, snow tire..I would buy that.. but will limit your speed and handling on dry/wet roads .. imo no need for more than 60-70 mph in winter..however also you can use a combination of #2 at the rear (for omega) and #3 on the front ..

#3 snow performance tire (can be also used for ice but dont expect performance like #1 and #2) and can be used for higher speeds even in dry/wet

I must note all of these comments depends on the assumption that all of tires have the same compound quality ..

one last thing to add: tires especially designed for ice have very soft compounds ..

try a simple test.. take the tires outside one by one, push from up with all your weight and try turn them left right which turns harder is the best for winter.. (studded being exception)

ps: a combination of #1 at the rear and #3 also can be considered..so studs wont effect steering..

pps: now I see, if those tires are for rav 4 all 4 tires must be equal..

Decided to go with the Nokians... not a bad purchase.

Tires sat outside at temps around 10deg F... so the rubber was still nice n soft.

Glad I went with them.

Actually, reading that link, the ABI (Association of British Insurers) have turned around and told the insurance companies to stop being so ruddy stupid.. so maybe there is some sense out there, after all ;)
