With that sort of budget the world is your lobster.  Lots of interesting Eighties big-iron stuff like the ur quattro, 635, XJ-S, SL, 928, Monza, Esprit, or Vitesse.  Then there's the Firenza, the RS2000, the Sunbeam Lotus, Granada Coupe, XJ6-C, Royale, Stag, loads of good examples that won't lose you money in the long run.

Cosworth all day long for me, sold mine about 3 years ago to a specialist in Guernsey. Mine was a 1993 L plate, in radiant red, a very rare colour. There are still good ones about, you just have to keep trying, have your tried passionford.com or the rsoc site? Everyone was asking me about it every time i went to the petrol station or just going tesco, true classic..

Don't know the price there but I would buy an old 6 series bmw (635 csi) in mint condition if I wanted something good and classical.
Cosworth is a great car (my brother in law had one) but I really don't like the four door version at all. Five door hatchback was better looking in my opinion

I have difficulty seeing how you can put the 205/309 GTi into a similar class as the Cossie...  There is such a strong likelihood that they have been hammered by a previous owner considering the image that they maintained during the 90's...

Seriously?

Do you think with the image the Cosworth had in the 90's they were all driven by Miss Daisy??

I would say there is as much chance of finding decent Cosworth as there is of finding a decent 1.9 205/ 309!

If you are looking down the 'grey import' route then there is always the Lexus Altezza (beefed up IS200)

For £8k you are getting into R32 range

How about a supercharged Jaguar?

The difference between the Cossie  and the GTi was the type of driver they attracted.  The GTi was more affordable and much lower insurance premiums and appeared to have a much younger age group attracted to them.  They Cossie on the otherhand was much more expensive and had a higher insurance premium (I remember a very old Top Gear where Clarkson said his quote for an Escort Cosworth was £20,000), which led to an older age group driving them.

With the Cosworth engine being so much more powerful than any of the Hot Hatch engines of the time, they didn't tend to be driven constantly on the limit unlike many of the 205's or 309's...  Similarly IMO the Cossie would have been looked after much better than the 205/309...

Cheers for all the suggestions guys.

Looked at a minter 1998 944 Turbo S with shit loads of history and bills today that may well be finding it's way to my garage shortly. I have arranged to go back over to look at it again when the roads thaw out and I can take it for a blast. The guy has had the car for 20yrs but his hip does not allow him to use a manual anymore. It's a bit on the steep side 8k but I might get it for low 7's if I try.

Will keep you all posted.

I've been lucky enough to have driven litterally 100's of different cars over the years. The 309GTI still ranks as one of my all time favourites, (owned two of them, plus a 1.6 205GTI).

In all seriousness, you'd need to be strapped into a Caterham to find a better handling car than a 205 / 309GTI. They really, really are that dam good.

And like all of the cars that I mentioned on the above post of mine, there are generally only tow types of cars left. The absolute minters, or the sheds.
