Vast majority of after market air intakes result in less performance in an MX5.  There are only a couple CAI's that do actually work but they cost loads and are quite rare.

I'd stick with the stock item.

Last time I was in the MX5 scene people had had found an inexpensive way of super charging them using M45's iirc from BMW Mini's.

 Reckon the fuel filter will be at worst, perhaps 4 years old, assuming guy didn't change it in his ownership. Car used to have an mtek chip in but was removed some time prior to sale. I liked the firmer rear springs and the resultant handling but agree it's not very persons idea of fun.....
