Cheaper MPG

Been looking around for a more economical car, particularly for work...Searched for an auto diesel with a budget between £2 - 8k.  Not sure what I am looking for.. ::) ::) Came up with some possibilities but loads of BMW and Mercs, and lots with leather, which I do not want.

It then occurred to me that £8k buys a lot of petrol, so why am I looking....... :-/ :-/ :-/

A bit of fun looking though... :y

an economical car is one that is either cheap in the first place and does about 50mpg... (eg. 306 diesel or similar) or expensive, but hold its value.

As you said, whatever you would save is only balanced out by what you have to spend in order to save it, BUT if you spend to save and then recoup said cost when you come to sell again.....

Well now i'm  going round in circles.

I would think if you wanted a really economical car you'd be avoiding the bigger cars?
Something like a fiesta tdci...My Missus one is a 56 plate, does 65mpg and is still quick. and big enough for the daily commute she does to work.

cost her £4600 with 35k on the clock about 5 months ago

Buy a car for 5000 which will do 60mpg
5000 will buy 833 gallons of petrol.

my mig does 25mpg average so 833 gallons will take me 20825 miles, call it two years.

at 60mpg, 20825 miles will cost me 347 gallons, or £2082.50, and my 5000 car can be re-sold for 2500?

So (ignoring maintenance costs, which I'll assume are equal).

Over two years and 21,000 miles, my mig costs me 5000, and I still own the mig
the "more economical" car costs me (5000-2500)+2082= 4582 - and I have to buy another car.

not much of a saving when you compare the driving comfort of a 3l Omega to a diesel fiesta - about £4 a week

Actually, it's worse than that - if you assume that you can p/e the omega or the 5k car for the same amount at the end of the two years, the
"economical" car is going to cost 2k *more* than the mig,
and doesn't break even until year 4 - actually 3.6 years.
And that's assuming petrol costs the same as diesel. - it's only about 3% difference - but again, in favour of the omega.

£7,500 would buy even more LPG! ::)  (the other £500 is for the kit  ;D)  :y
