has been a pain in the bum recently.

Had troubles getting getting a clutch and clutch fork replaces - long story, but hopefullt sorted/

Since then had a knocking noise so took to a mate of a mate to investigage. plus also asked for a once over and a cambelt job.
Seems the head gasket had been going for a while as was pointed out my Mrs Skrunts so got him to do all the jobs, brakes, head, cam belt etc plus the full service.

He even took the sump off and cleared all the crud out. The problem he found whilst in there was that the "Oil Ladder" (His description) where all the head bolts come thogh the block and tighened into it seems 2 of them had been E Metaled.

Then seems the head would not torque down properly so bought all new head bolts, still wont torque doen, so need a replacemnt rail.

New ones are out of the question, and 2nd hand ones it seems are like rocking horse poo.  So the advice is to helicoil them.

Any advice welcome.

Assuming it's a K series, uprated HG and ladder from Land Rover ;)

I'm worried about the job - was he attempting to reuse head bolts :o


LR do uprated ladder for use with the MLS HG.

LR do uprated ladder for use with the MLS HG.

the old head bolts are going to be stretched considerably longer than new bolts..

never looked at the ladder, do the bolts go thru the ladder or bottom out?

I believe through, IIRC.

BUT the head bolts MUST always be replaced and never reused. I know K series bolts are expensive, but there is no option.

So he's taken off the head (or at least loosened it) to fix his previous shortcut? Has he replaced the HG again?

If its the MLS + shim one, its supposed to have the uprated ladder and upreated bolts.

Just been doing the "other halfs" Rover 400. Usual head gasket failure with the old style gasket.  :(

I have used the new MLS gasket, new stretch bolts and the uprated oil rail. All came as a kit (with more gaskets than you can shake a stick at!!) for around £110 which was much less then trying to source them seperately.

I notice that Rimmer Bros (who have fantastic stocks of Rover parts) are doing the new uprated oil rail (ref LCN000140L) at around £50 + P/P

TBH Jamie, we just want the car back on the road so havent actualy asked him all  the intricate detail etc

Also insteresting is the post after yours regards the kit, had I/we known of that we would have just ordered it and gone the way.

But that's life.   :-/
