Are they a total no no or are they OK once modified head? sorted?

Shocked by Series Landrover / Defender prices...

I am looking at winter options and one is to buy a cheap 4x4 Freelanders seem to be the cheapest when fitted with the 1.8 engine, not bothered about speed or serious economy, given it's primary intended uses....

The other option is to lose the Mig and go for a more expensive 4x4...... :-/ :-/ :-/

If properly sorted the K series isn't too bad.

It's about the worst engine you could put into a 4x4 though, IMHO. You need to wring its' neck just to keep up with traffic. If I wanted a freelander I'd probably go for a tractor engined one.

Then again, if you can pick up a bargain with a HGF...

Problem with the Freelander is not just the engines,the drivetrain has issues as well as electrics,window motors/central locking all fail regularly,Id rather buy an old Rav 4 or similar

Petrol fuel consumption in FL1 is absolutely horrendous, in my experience, let alone reliability issues.  And I simply cannot get comfy in one.  No seat height adjust.  No steering wheel adjust.  Just...not comfy for me...

If looking for a winter hack, there are a lot of alternates from the far east but, for resale if you have an off road storage, I would vote for Disco or Defender.  Avoiding petrol ones of course.

Paid about 800 for my 300 tdi Disco commercial couple of years ago with 122k on it.  Now turned 146k and, bits falling off apart, last couple of MOT's needed only minor welding, nowt serious.  Engine is nigh bulletproof and gives in excess of 30 mpg on daily commute to work when kept serviced.

have you priced up a set of winter tyres for the Omega ?

I too would advocate an older Disco/Defender or Range Rover. Avoid diesel at all costs, tho. - they make glacial drift seem fast. Seriously, they're slow enough to put you at risk.

I wondered about this, with decent winter tyres and boot full of weight, how well Omega would cope.

With 3 Omegas in the fleet, they could easily be swapped too  :-/

I never got stuck, but struggled at times in my 2.2 manual without TC, so with TC, decent tyres should perform fairly well  :-/

To be fair they did add 'in some areas' under the big doom & gloom headline of "Britain to be hit by SNOW in October... forecasters warn an early winter is on its way" .. for all I know the 'parts' could be up in Glencoe

Winter tyres do work had michelin winter tyres on my old bimmer i did alot of miles in the snow with no backend action 

Avoid the freelander its not upto much its 4 WD system plays up the Isuzu troopers have major problems as do Shoguns engine related! theyre also utterly useless offroad poor axle articulation the Daihatsu fourtrak's although agricultural are very capable and relatively reliable they eat radiators them cheapo Ssangyongs have mercedes running gear & diesel engines
