Tony H junior computer help needed please
« on: 29 July 2007, 14:33:11 »

Calling all computer experts out there, I know diddly  sh*t about computers so I'm no help. My son is having a problem with his wireless internet connection, can anyone advise please? Over to him for the explanation.
hey there, the problem is that when we bought a new router and laptop, we decided to secure it using WEP because before then we hadnt had any security, anyway i set up the new laptop and a seperate pc to use the new wireless connection no problem using the WEP security and putting the correct passphrase in, like i said these work fine, however my pc doesnt seem to want to let me use the internet wirelessly, i have put into the routers settings to allow my MAC address but when i try to connect, it comes up with "the network could not assign a network address" i have googled this but its not been much help. has anyone had this problem before and/or know how to solve it?

Cheers
Liam

Is the pc using the same IP address as the laptop - had a similar problem on ours and the desktop was using the same IP address as one of the laptops.

The error means that it was unable to get response from dhcp server - so either no IPs left in range, or the communication isn't working.

Try with a static IP - if that works, then investigate dhcp issue, if not, still a problem at the physical or datalink layer.

Oh, btw, WEP is insecure. Use WPA if possible ;)

Not exactly same IP I hope!  In most case, changing last octet will suffice....   ....other cases we'll have to start going down tcp/ip theory...
