200 miles after buying the car, I was cruising at about 60mph today when the engine stuttered. Not a misfire, but a momentary (fraction of a second) complete loss of power, which happened again and again. Pulled over, switched off and restarted. Now EML on constantly, no stuttering. Performance isn't fantastic at low speeds (perhaps this is standard on 2.0's).

Found the paperclip test on this forum and shorted pins 4 & 6. EML flashed 10times, pause, 3 times, pause, 4 times, pause, 10 times, longer pause, then repeated.

Looked up on http://www.topbuzz.co.uk/info/fault_codes/fault_codes.htm#simtec56 and found that this is code 0340 --> Camshaft sensor on a Siemens Simtec 56.5 ECU.

This confused me, 'cos the paperclip test post suggests that all 2.0 engines have a 56.0/56.1 ECU.

Does the code and diagnosis of cambelt sensor match the symptoms?

Should I go to a dealer for a replacement? Other options?

Reread the codes - should start with three 12s...

I'm positive about the codes. (Spent a good ten minutes looking at the flashing light!)

Did some digging and tried "omega X20XEV simtec" in Google. This took me to several references to to the Simtec 56.5 engine management system being used on the X20XEV 2.0 16V engine. See http://buy1.snapon.com/products/uk/UK-PDF/eescgb213b-pdf/eescgb213b-ems.pdf for example.

So it looks like the X20XEV used two different management systems. Anyhow, now I know I've got a camshaft sensor fault indicated, I've checked the service history and found that the camshaft sensor was replaced 18 months/14,000 miles ago. Should they fail that quick? Is there a possiblity of a loose wire or some other simple fault?

if its saying camshaft, then thats fairly conclusive... Its probably the wiring, but it comes with part of the sensor....

Cam sensor changed at the local dealers today (£120). Running sweet now, thanks.

There were two versions of Simtec used.....the main difference is the later version is flash programable.

For info, TIS states a labour time of 0.3 (hours) for cam sensor change job op no J795200 and the sensor is £38.35+VAT so it sounds like you might have been overcharged

Vx dealer probably couldnt find it to start with Mark.....so charged an hours labour
