Im back Im back as a matter of fact!!
« on: 28 November 2006, 21:13:46 »

;D Hi Guys, just returned from me mammoth tour of Spain with a caravan on the hook at the back, Towed by my trusty Omega TD estate, after 5286 miles around Spain and through France I can tell you that the Bmw engined Omega is a hell of a tool!!! Now i know mine is chipped and a manual but, on the way back I decided to put the standard ECU in instead of the chipped one, (and whoever says you must have the corresponding key fob is talking 'dangle berries' by the way as i have changed mine between three different ecu and it always uses the original immobilisor fob to enable it) now with the chipped ecu in it i was getting around 275 miles to 40 litres of diesel. so when i put the standard ecu in to see how it compared over the next 600 miles  it was only giving me 207 or 208 to 40 litres!!!! and it was bloody hard work to drive!! with the chipped ecu i could put the cruise on at 60mph and it would sail up hills in cruise as long as it wasnt gigantic of course but with the standard ecu the cruise disengaged as soon as it started to climb the hill cos it just didnt have the power to sustain it,
even using me secret button (intercooler fan) it couldnt do it!! now the caravan weighed in at just under 2 ton so all in all the car did bloody well i think, and the sum total of breakdowns or mechanical interuptions? nothing nada zilch unless you want to count me doing an oil change at 3000 miles cos the engine was working blooming hard in the heat to drag the caravan over mountain passes,
so i figured it deserved it ;D must also say that after discovering shell v power diesel was only a couple of pence more than the standard stuff i stated using it and it is very much better too power and smoothness both improved!!
brief summary of the trip is  landed at Santander drove down through Burgos Madrid cordoba cadiz tarifa malaga (38degrees!!) almeria valencia granada over the med border and up through france to calais!!! sound easy but look at teh map its a blooming long way!!!

2 ton caravan 40 mpg - wow.  I pull a 850kg with a 2.2 and get more like 23 mpg.  Maybe I need a chip (or a bigger engine).  FYI I find BP Ultimate gives more power and MPG than Shell but mines a petrol so may differ in your TD.  Sounds like a nice trip though, welcome back.  8-)

Thats not bad going,I made that 28.6mpg with the 'van on the back  :y
Is your chipped Ecu a proper solder in remapped chip or one of those 'diesel tuning' boxes that you can buy??
Just curious coz i'm looking at the options for my Tractor Auto to give it a little bit more oomph after the Mrs said it wasn't fast enuf  ::)  I quietly reminded her that we didn't buy this one for racing!!!  ;D
Gotta ask,do I take it the Lotus Carlton and 'Monster Meega' are your cars?? Saw your 'Meega on VON..I bet that upsets a few people, proper stealth!!  :o

Oh and you may be back to work but it's xmas soon....more time off LOL!!!

Cheers

Elwood: It's a 106 miles to Chicago. We got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.
Jake: Hit it!  8-)

Not sure if tractors are same, but petrols, the chip is just mapping and othe related settings. The immobiliser link to ECU is dealt with by other parts of ECU.  This is why you can buy a chip and fit without immobiliser issues.  If you changed entire ECU, you would need to get immobiliser programmed to it.  :)

Note....the diesel ECU is different and the immobilser setup is also different....it operates isolating relays and doesn't disable fueling.

The chip is a total remap buddy and it is a removable one in the ecu bit of a pain taking the lot apart but if your near anytime come on round and we can fit my ecu to your car and you can try it no probs

Hey!

Good to see you back, hope you had a good trip.

And his chipped 2.5TD is fast, I had the privillage of driving it, for a diesel it is incredibly smooth and its like a rocket out of the blocks in 1st!
