coolant loss and smell of antifreeze.
« on: 12 February 2007, 12:23:18 »

SWMBO's 2.5 V6 is losing coolant slowly, also when I drove it yesterday, I noticed the smell of antifreeze after a 70 mile trip. Is it the HBV or perhaps the heater matrix?

Ideas?

TIA!!

Rod.

Slow loss is generaly a leak from the oil cooler to block seal or the stat to block seal....

HBV more prone to leaks than the matrix. Was the smell felt inside the cabin? if so was it stronger on the drivers side?

Hmm, not sure TBH, I was only sitting on the drivers side, but my wife never complained about it and she's very susceptible to fumes, so I'm sure she'd've mentioned it.

The HBV might be spalshing the footwell from outside, but then the leak would have been more substantial...

What does anti-freeze smell like? As I have a slow leak but have noticed a funny smell that I used to think was air con gas when it leak out of a split pipe. But it still smells of it a bit now so I know it can't be that.

I can't spot any obvious leaks though, apart from some white crystals down the front edge of my radiator. It's not damp at all though.

Open the expansion bottle (when cold!), dip your finger in it, then smell it... but make sure you wash your finger with pleny of water  ;D

Seriously, put something down the bottle (stick, cloth...) and then smell it.
