Replacement GM downpipe might be blowing...
« on: 09 April 2007, 17:01:58 »

Hi Guys, i hope someone might be able to lend a hand with this one...

Soon after i bought my 4 pot W plate Omega i discovered that the manifold had cracked and that the cat was blowing.  So i spent one sunny weekend replacing the cat and drilling out the sheared studs - job done!  Although i was in for a little shock wheni realised that my new cat (non GM) was a pile of crap that made my once smooth, quite Omega into something that sounded like a Fraud Escort!  and for the past 18 months i have lived with the fact that i was 'had' by B+M Tyres and Exhausts as they make and sell total poo exhausts. Grrrr  >:(

Anyhow, since then i have kept an eye out for a replacement second hand GM cat on Ebay and i managed to find one a few weeks ago, which i have just installed.  Since i replaced the cat i noticed a significant reduction in rasping sound, although it now blows a little from around the downpipe.  I have just spent the past few hours pratting about trying to locate the source of the blowing gas although i can't find it for the life of me.   I didn't use a new manifold/downpipe gasket as the old one looked ok but i suspect this may be the cause?

Does anybody know of a way to detect where gas leaks from?  could i use a tissue on the joints?

Cheers in advance.

Regards
Marc

A bit of bog paper dangled in front of suspect leak should give the game away...

Cheers - I'll give that a shot!  I am starting to think that the gas leak may be coming from inside the sound insulation....  :(  It's hard to tell as it's a little difficult listening with your ear while the engine is running and when it's at 250+ deg's.

I may leave it for a week and see it any black carbon marks apppear....

Cheers

Oops... i take it that'll be a wright off then?  I have just bought a new gasket from Pentagon and plat todrop this in later in the week.  I'll also give the flexi-joint a once over.  I hope it's not the flexi-joint as i don't want to spend any more money on the car - it's up for sale in a few weeks.

Does anyone have an old GM cat/downpipe that they'd like flog?  the cat doesn't need to be a worker as i'll chop and join to mine. It's the downpipe and heat sheild i really need as that's what keeps the noise down.

Cheers
