Is it the HBV??
« on: 14 May 2007, 12:30:37 »

I topped the coolant water up 2 1/2 weeks ago and had to put a litre in today... I can't see any water leaks on the floor or even around any of the hoses under the coolant resevoir. After already reading all the post you guys put on here I am thinking is it the HBV?? so I phoned Vauxhall to see how much one is and they not heard of one!!! ;D but they do have a Secondary Air Valve that a multi plug goes into.... is this the thing I need????
Also can you buy these HBV (secondary Air Valve) whatever they are using the Trade Cards??

Secondary air valve is a different thing. The HBV has no electrical connection, just a vacuum pipe and 3 water pipes. I don't know the part number off-hand but I'm sure someone on here will.

I don't think they're on Trade Club but there almost certainly will be a small trade discount available.

It could also be the oil cooler... or rather the oil cooler cover or coolant bridge. They tend to leak discretely around the back of the engine and evaporate so no obvious leak until you take the plenum and intake flange off to inspect. And of course it could be a leaking hose at the back of the engine... But start with the HBV....

LK,

The HBV sits just behond the plenum underneath the scuttle - its a black plastic cylinderical thing with 3? hoses and a vac pipe off the top.

You can just about get a hand to it without removing the scuttle or plenum.   I think it only really leaks when the engine is running though so maybe worth running up to temp with heaters on, switch off and reach round (carefully!) with your hand to see if you can detect moisture?  It could be its dripping on the exhaust and so never reaching the ground.

I've had two go and in my experience they go big time so it is best to sort it sooner rather than later (if that's the problem).

Cheers
Ian

Well i think i will do it anyway while i have (or we Pete  ;D) have the Plenum off then at least I know its being done... but to honest when i turn the car off it does smell hot when i walk past it, wondered if the Cam Gaskets were leaking again but James did them at Tunnies cambelt party, so i wonder if it could be the coolant running onto the exhaust and making the smell? :y
