Rattling/Blowing EGR pipe
« on: 21 June 2007, 14:51:50 »

Hello everyone, I appear to have a rattling sound coming from my EGR pipe and a slight blowing coming from the back under acceleration, so today I am gonna blank off the EGR and see if it cures the blowing as a temporary fix until I can be bothered to lay on a wet road and sort it properly...... if it works ok blanked off, will it cause my emissions to go higher for the MOT test which is fast aproaching?
Downside is that if it doesnt cure my blowing, the next step is gonna be a reluctant DIY drivers side exhaust manifold gasket replacement or even worse exhaust manifold replacement if its cracked as I've heard that alot of drivers side ones fail  :'(
Been scouring the net and forums for days almost continuasly looking for advice or similar probs, but results are all baffling me..... anyone got a good pointer to a link for dummies on replacing gasket and manifold on drivers side? Car is T reg MV6 manual
Thankyou and apollogies if its an annoying question, I have tried to avoid posting this silly question ::)

Don't worry about posting.  I don't think its a silly question, and even if it was they are the easiest to answer.. ;)

You mention rattling - the EGR itself rattles a lot when the 3 bolts shear - as has happend to me twice.  Sure its not that?

locate the EGR - its a cylindrical object, I guess about the size of a small tin of peas, upright about half way along the drivers side of the plenum.

see if the can shaped bit is loose.  Should be fairly obvious if it is.  There are three internal bolts which break (non replacable as far as I know).

Replacing it is straightforward - two torx bolts (soak overnight with wd40 or plusgas ) and an electrical connector.

.. if that's the problem.

OK UPDATE!!!! EGR was rattling slightly, so disconnected it from the top main bolt and turned the copper sealing ring round slightly and tightened it back up - problem sorted there..... and now it has eliminated that dodgy noise, the blowing seems to be coming from about half way down the rear of the engine on the drivers side....... im thinking possibly manifold to downpipe or is it cat to downpipe (when looking from underneath the car, its the single connector right up the back of the fire wall just below the heat shield) as it was only fitted a month or so ago, is it common for a new gasket to give up so quick, im about 80% sure its not the rear of the manifold, but in the back of my mind im still worrying...... still im making gentle progress  :y
