Vasser Pumpen Kaput !
« on: 26 June 2007, 21:27:48 »

Ok...So after 3 weeks my Omega killed a new water pump with coolant flying out at the bottom of the engine as posted previously...no problem, the garage changed it under warantee....BUT...
there is now a black/grey substance floating around in the coolant tank (very small pieces, almost dust like)....I flushed the system out, with water only to be honest and 24 hrs later theres still some in there. I've fished some out with my finger and to be honest it hasn't really got any "substance" to it.

If I rub it between my fingers it just seems to disappear with no side effects....no dirty/oily fingers..nothing.

About a month ago I changed the oil to Castrol Edge, costing a soddin' fortune and ever since, including now, the oil looks as fresh as if its only just been poured in....NO contamination whatsoever.

I should perhaps pointout that due to two water pump changes and 3 flushes with both water AND Rad Flush its been flushed 3-4 times within 6 weeks. Equally, the garage said that to get the heating to work the system needed a VERY good flush out as it was blocked somewhere.

So is what I'm seeing in the coolant now, a continuing result of loads of flush's and its 9 years of "gunk" thats now floating around.

Any ideas or comments would be very much appreciated.

The garage hasn't used some sort of leak-stop type substance?

Maybe the Tech used some of the VX grey sealant (as used on the oil cooler plate) when sealing the new coolant pump on - and small amount has gotten into the coolant.

If it is, I would be concerned. I don't know, but I'm sure the bearing seal should stop any grease getting into the coolant...

Agreed, especially a noticable amount...

Did he use sealant on assembly..

I think he meant, and I'm no mechanic, bearings of the water pump...as it was the water pump that failed.
I fairness...he didn't say HOW the pump failed...just that it had.

Also, he said he changed the water pump without removing the cam belt....is this possible.

The amounts of gunge in the coolant is very minimal at the moment....no piece is more than 2mm wide and most are
just dust like.

Also...come to think of it...I didn't notice any "stuff" in the coolant when he did the original cambelt/water pump change....ONLY after he thoroughly flushed the system out to clear the "blockage" which in turn allowed heat into the cabin...

That said, it might have been the bearing seal that failed after a couple of weeks, coinsiding with the radical flush to clear the blockage. ???

Cambelt won't need to come off for coolant pump change (on V6) as it's driven off the Auxiliary belt.

ooooooooooooo ok...

So I guess I'd better just keep and eye on it.

Would it help do you think if I flushed the system again but ran some more Rad Flush through it...or would you recommend
another manufacturer and their product if indeed it IS grease floating around in the cooling system somewhere ????
