Abit of an update, not good

Been driving it about, noticed on cold start up blue smoke then after a while it disappears, also noticed the exhaust has become noisier when driving and my MPG has gone down and is dropping as I use it.

I know the blue smoke is usually valve stem seals :'(

I thought it could be an airlock yesterday in the coolant system so I left it to run yesterday with the pressure cap off and squeezed the rad hoses, put heater dials to max and the heater is working hot air coming from the vents.

Dont know what to think at the moment, need to get a job before doing major repairs to the car unfortunately.

I had a look at the exhaust manifold and this is not blowing, guess the cat could be Phucked possibly blocked causing the problem of the engine temp.

I wouldn't say 95-97 is an overheating problem, and if the system's not boiling over it reinforces that. It's a little hotter than usual, unless it's only getting that hot when in traffic and it falls when on the open road, in ehich case it's totally normal.

I'd say the breathers need cleaning, as that may explain the issues around the oil filler cap.

I also wonder if you've got a partially blocked exhaust box / cat. That would explain the difference in exhaust noise, the fuel consumption and may well cause the engine to run a little hotter if it's working against huge pressure in the exhaust.

I have had a look at the breather system on the car on tuesday, I had them all off and they were clear even the oil seperator (Flame trap) looked pretty good.

There is back pressure when idling ticks over fine but I'm now getting a kind of droning noise when driving along now which make me think possible issue with the exhaust. and what with the mpg drop its a little worrying

I was also thinking perhaps an air leak in the exhaust somewhere.

Any other ideas are much appreciated.

sounds very much like the problems i was having heres what i done, replaced the water pump, cam belt, put 50/50 vauxhall coolant in, replaced hbv, replaced the two temp switches in the rad and had the exhaust manifold gaskets replaced, cleaned and replaced breathers, cleaned the icv, cleaned the throttle body, done the cam box gasket, and changed oil/filter plugs air filter, all parts have been oe equipment and most where brought from autovaux with the exeption of the hbv and the cam cover gasket  not all at the same time over the last 4 mounths this has been completed and now when normal driving the temp is running between 90-92 and when stop start driving the temp will rise very slowly to about 95-97 and the fans will cut in and bring the temp down very quickly to 92 also with combined driving the mpg is showing 26.5 mpg and the car feels stronger, smoother and generaly nicer to drive, it has cost me a fair bit but i have a very good friend that owns his own garage so the labour cost has been a fraction of the cost but i have helped him and im confident in doing all the work again myself, i know alot of these are not related to the problem but they have been done so im keeping the car even though the wife wants a tdi golf
