...Does anyone know if the quality of oil (e.g 0/40W, 10/40W, fully synthetic, semi synthetic...) affects the consumption?....
In principal oil consumption with thinner oil
should be higher....
So 5W-30 may consume more than 5W-40 when the engine is hot, and 0W-40 may consume more than 10W-40 when cold... and 5W-30 more than 10W-40 both when hot or cold....
Having said that, as mark DTM pointed out, slight oil consumption is actually good for the engine, so if the consumption does not exceed the manufacturer's spec I wouldn't suggest to change the oil viscosity to 'compensate'. Going for thicker oil is only recommended in high-milers with excessive oil consumption due to engine wear.
As for semi-vs-full synth, this by itself should not make a difference as long as the viscosities are the same, though full-synth tend to have lower 'W' viscosities than semi-synth - the typical semi is 10W-xx while the typical full is 5W-xx or 0W-xx. So it is possible that oil consumption with full-synth will be higher when the engine is cold due to the lower 'W' value.
This is something I will be looking at soon - as mentioned earlier I am currently loosing oil, which could be either through consumption or though a yet-undetected leak. Once I had a good look for leaks again, I will try switching to semi-synth - I have been using using full-synth for the past 15k - if the oil lose stops than at least I will know I have no leak... as said I don't actually mind if the engine consumes some oil, I just want to know for sure if the oil lose is due to consumption or leak.
