Crank sensor
« on: 12 August 2007, 00:10:00 »

I had a problem in starting and firing up the engine when the car is left not running after more than 4-6 hours. Full description in this thread:
http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1184513058

I asked about the crank sensor and parts shops told me that this sensor differs according to engine size. So, a crank sensor for a 3.2 V6 is different than a 2.2 engine. Is this true?

Can anyone tell me what is the paperclip test?

What is the oxygene sensor for?

Thanks to all

Crank sensors do vary. There are even several types for the V6 engines. Best to tell the dealer the specifics of your car and get them to identify the correct one. Mine failed recently and was PN 90540743 - that's on a 2003 3.2 so that may well be the one.

Difficulty starting is a common symptom of a failed crank sensor. When refitting, route the wiring up the inner wing well away from the exhausts and it'll be more reliable in future.

A paperclip test is where fault codes can be retrieved from the ECU by shorting some connections with a paperclip. Unfortunately it doesn't work on later cars such as the 3.2.

The oxygen sensors (there are 4 on later V6s) monitor the exhaust gas and allow the ECU to adjust the fuel mixture to give the correct balance of gases for the catalytic converters to do their work. They can also tell when the cats are working where 4 sensors are fitted.
