Rear Discs + Pads..
« on: 13 August 2007, 21:06:30 »

Noticed a grinding sound over the weekend...  rear disc pad worn almost right down, surprised at myself, I'm normally a  preventitive kinda guy, rather than a fix when broken, anyway, original 111k discs, a bit boogered to say the least.  Bit of a devil to get discs off, backed the handbrake adjusters right off, applied some heat to the face of the hub, bit of a wallup with a knocking stick, off they came..  refitted discs n' pads, adjusted up the shoes.. 2 hours work, job well done!  So, there..  Anyone thinking of having a go at this one,, go for it  £81 all in, on trade, genuine VX too!

Sounds like a good job and well done.

How were the handbrake shoes?  They can easily seperate the ferodo material from the steel backing when they get a idiot or two from a monday hammer.  Can perhaps be worth changing them when you are in there to save work later.  Pattern shoes are fine, no need for genuine VX for these, by all accounts.

Remember to readjust after a wee while, once the handbrake shoes bed in again though.....   :y

They looked OK about 5mm and even.. hence reusing them....  yes, will adjust up in about 500 miles or so...  will probably drive with 'em on partially engaged for a few hundred yds...

Yes, Vx shoes are stupidly expensive, and lets face it, not really required on handbrake.

Vx, £37 + VAT TC

Motorserv (from memory), £12.95

Dave, you quoted me before I could modify my post.

The prob could easily be that you have weakened/dislodged the ferodo from the shoe by delivery of a few skelps from a lump hammer, so take care that the whole gubbins doesn't come loose in days to come....   :y

To digress a little, same subject...  needed some shoes for a B&B caravan chassis about 11 years ago, ABI dealers wanted £45 + vat for the set of 4 shoes...  they're quite small and expensive for 11 year ago... anyway, would have run metal to metal first!!!!  Went to a local truck brake dealers... they relined the afore mentioned for the caravan service centres in my area, they cost £12 all in... thus proving, what bobbin rastards caravan service companies really are...
