Aftermarket air filter problems
« on: 17 August 2007, 15:17:49 »

Just put a cone air filter on the wifes 2001 mv6 2.6
The engine management light has come on i presume it is because too much air is going in the engine.
Will it damage anything if i leave it on ?
It would be a pity to take it off as it sounds great.
Cheers

It won't be too much air as the standard filter is not very restrictive in the first instance.

Retrace your steps and make sure you haven't left anything unplugged (MAF, temperature sensor, etc) and that you haven't created an air leak anywhere.

If that doesn't highlight anything it could be that oil from the new filter has contaminated the MAF sensor.

If the light is on, a serious fault exists which needs attention. It is worth doing a paperclip test or getting the codes read if nothing obvious is the cause, and I certainly wouldn't ignore it.

Hi m8
didnt take the maf plug off it was just a case of undoing the jubilee clip on the pipe and then removing the airbox.
The air filter is brand new and hasnt had any oil put on it yet.
The car runs fine still.
How do i fine out the codes ?
Cheers

Sometimes the filters are coated in oil which inturn coats the MAF which will cause the EML to come on. I would use something like tape head cleaner to remove the oil from the MAF Sensor.

Some fault codes will clear and the light extinguish once the car has had a number of starts without the problem recurring. Some need to be reset.

If I were you I would read the fault codes out of the system just for peace of mind that it's not something to worry about. Older cars used to flash out fault codes on the engine light when a paperclip is used to bridge two connections on the dignostic connector. The so-called "paperclip test". I think I'm right in saying that a 2.6 will be a later version of the engine management system that no longer supports this.

The other option is to read the fault codes with either a GM Tech 2 which is available at most Vauxhall dealers and some independants, and TheBoy on here has a couple which he will help out with at very reasonable rates if you're near one of them.

There is a so-called "cheapo tech2". Do a search on here and you'll find out all about them. It's an interface for a PC which allows fault codes to be read, available on ebay for about 30-40 quid. The software to support this is a real pain, mostly in hungarian and will require a laptop with a serial port on. However, many of us have found that this is adequate for finding and clearing the odd fault code.

It all depends where you're located, really. There may well be a member near you who can help out.

Wont this cone filter be taking in hot air from under bonnet rather than cold air from the original intake hose?

Very likely.
I used the original air feed from the filter box, put it back in position so it's touching the cone....
