Sloppy, slappy wipers
« on: 20 August 2007, 15:49:25 »

Anyone changed the wiper mechanism ? My wipers slap over the screen rubber at the lower passenger side and the same at the upper R/hand edge of the Drivers side.
I've tried adjusting them by moving the arms on the splines(Wiper arm removal tool about £8-00 inc vat from Machine Mart works well), but  no matter what position I put them in, they're just not satisfactory.
Is the linkage adjustable or does anyone have any "tightening up" tips ?
If neither of the above, has anyone changed the linkage and is there a post already on here somewhere ?
(Sorry if there is, I'm hopless at finding the "bleedin' obvious") .

Are you using the right size wipers? They may be too long...

Not sure about the Omega, but on the Vectra and Astra at the time you could only get the whole mechanism from Vx, not single componnents, making the second-hand unit the only realistic option when replacing.

I had to use shorter blades to get them operational.
I do have my '94 2.5td for bits. I'll have to compare the mechanisms.
Any idea as to whether it's a pig of a job, or is it easy e'nuff once the arms are off and the panels are removed ?

They are a pain to remove - one bolt is difficult and getting them untangled can be a pain.

Allow about 1/2 hour to get them out and in

Does it just do this when your on the move?

My first Omega did that when I first got it.

Then I found that they needed blades with spoilers on at least on the drivers side.

Just a suggestion. :-/

Also check that the mechanism is firmly bolted to the engine bay (easy to do with the scuttle cover off) as I have heard of them come loose.

Have been driving Vauxhall cars for 20+ years and every single one has had slappy wipers..cavalier/astra/carlton/omega..only solution I found was to replace wipers about every 3/4 months with new..don,t buy anything other than Bosch and now with the option of a spoiler on drivers side it does improve slightly..but think it is just another vauxhall thing which we tend to live with...am sure it is the wind getting under wiper and causing it to jump

Nah, the fault lies with the linkage. I have at least 3 inches of play when they're in the parked position and can see play in the linkage.
I fitted new blades and found that even after adjusting the arms on the splines, the only way of getting them working was to source shorter blades. The previous owner had moved the std size wipers back on the arms and cable tied them on !!

Pull the wiper off the spine and move it up the screen a nadgers. Does a real GM screen have markers at the bottom of the screen like a Senator has? Mine's got a RAC screen fitted and there's no marks.

Aye, will have to have a fettle, not sure why it should touch though, the problem comes and goes (a bit like the women in my life  ::) ) It should probably have some new wipers as well but i'm after some VX flatblade jobbies when someone is kind enough to put a part number forward  ;)

19" Passenger Side & 24" Drivers Side approx.

No markings on bottom of screen, they just sit in a black 'band' across the bottom, but it's all common sense I suppose. The wipers do seem to park ok though  :-?

New std blades fitted...slap,slap...shorter blades fitted...slap,slap...Doh !!!
Moving the arms on the splines with the shorter blades has made them useable but I think I'm gonna have get at the mechanism.
The arms are the correct ones.
