HBV Faulty?
« on: 12 September 2007, 17:54:35 »

Hi,

Changed my rovker gaskets and all running fine. Then it started to idle rubbish (solved in another thread) , but noticed today when the fans are just about to kick on to cool the engine there is smoke coming from the back of the plenum , smells like steam.

Will this be the reason the car was getting red hot inside as it was doing it? So will it be the HBV Valve kaput?

Definately worth checking.

Is it pressurising too much?

I think it is yeah. I get a whiff of coolant every so often. It does seem to be running a bit hot and when the fans kick in and i open the door i get a right waft of hot air around my ankles as i step out of the car.

If it is pressurising a bit too much, its possible you may get coolant weeping from various connections.  Is top hose getting very hard?

Scuttle off and have a look, certainly sounds like the HBV.

Yep, orangey water is either due to the coolant getting far to hot or it's in need of replacement and the system needs a damn good flush out. All the others are relative to HBV failure. HTH.

Right ok. So is it best to totally drain the coolant , then replace the hbv , then refill with new coolant?
