autobox interlock
« on: 18 October 2007, 12:26:39 »

Hi
Does anyone know how the interlock works on the auto-box that stops you starting the engine in gear.
I have checked the gear selector switch with a meter and it is working ok.
So what happens when you are in P or N is there a relay which stops the starter motor?
or is it an ECU function?

What's the problem? Is it that the car won't start in P or N?
Does the key turn all the way to the "start" position?

The key turns all the way but the starter motor won't crank.
if I connect a wire to the stater motor, the motor will turn and the engine will start and run.
I can select gears and drive the car.
This is why I think it's the interlock

From the diagram I've got (later car) the signal to the solenoid appears to pass through the gear selector switch. Pins H and E if that means anything. Both wires Black and Red in colour.

Only on the 2.5 TD is there a relay in the circuit.

I guess there's a break in the circuit to/from the selector switch if the switch is definately making contact between the two pins. Maybe a defective ignition switch?

Thanks
I will trace out the wires as it appears the interlock is via the Gear selector switch,
and also have a look at the ignition switch

Hi
It was the gear selector switch, when I got it off it fell to bits in my hand.
found a new switch in box off ebay for £25.
All I got to do is fit it now.
