Hi, Just got a very nice Omega 2.5 V6 GLSi, my first Vauxhall. I have a few minor queries and I was hoping some old hands could help me out...

It sometimes idles roughly, but generally it runs and sounds fine. It will almost stall, then I guess the engine management computer recovers it, it's OK for a while then it will slow and almost stall again. Do I need to follow the Idle control valve cleaning procedure detailed in the tech section of the forum?

The dot matrix display has lines of dots missing - Because I'm new to Vauxhall and Omegas this is the first or only one I have seen so don't know if mine is a half height, 8 or 10 digit etc. It shows the temperature and radio station name. Is it possible to swap it out for a working one? Will any of those mentioned in the FAQ fit or do I have to get the same one again? Is it an easy job?

Where is the oil filter? It's not where it says it should be in my Haynes manual and I can't see anything that resembles an oil filter.

How the *&!@£ do I get the spark plug out nearest the passenger compartment? Is it an engine-out job? I can just see the service engineers sucking air though their teeth and shaking their heads.

I have two different models of ignition key. One has quite rubbery lock/unlock buttons the other has hardish blisters. The blister key needs a new battery - how do I open it?

What model is my Vx Omega? It's an S reg, has no rear head restraints, window controls are in the center, it has radio controls on the adjustable steering wheel, no sunroof, does have air con, (non-calibrated) speedo reads to 160mph, I don't know what type of headlights it has but they have short chrome tubes inside with thick lenses. I'm guessing minifacelift?

Before you spend any money on a replacement key fob, if it turns out that it is 'broken' rather than requiring a battery, read my post on 'an easy cure' under this section, and the comments re. soldering etc.

Yes, the ICV is a good starting point. Also make sure that car had a good service inc. all filters i.e. air filter and fuel filter, and clean the engine breathers and vacuum system.

Replacing the display is an easy job, check the instrument panel removal in the maintenance guides. But you need to (a) identify the correct type – i.e. TID. MID, etc, (b) the correct year – those from the pre-1998 minifaclift are different to the later ones, and (c) it should be from a car with the same engine and transmission type or the new display will need to be calibrated using TECH2.

It’s right below the passenger spark plug you were complaining about… if you raise the from passenger-side wheel and look under the car just behind the front wheel, you will see it. If your car is a post-mini-facelift, then you might have the little alloy canister with the renewable paper element instead of the traditional disposable tin canister used on earlier models.

I found it quite easy to be honest… the trick is to have a ratchet handle with a good mixture of different size extensions. This will allow you to place it straight on top of the plug and still clear the scuttle. You can of course remove the scuttle which may help, but as said I did not find it necessary..

Yes, minifacelift, the radio controls on the steering wheel as well as side front airbags are two good giveaways.

Also, what service record do you have, specifically when were the timing belt and tensioners changed?  Its the tensioners that fail and when they do, it will wreck the engine.  They need changing at 40k miles or 4 years.....

I have the complete service history - belt and tensioners were replaced early this year.

I did my plugs at the weekend spaceprobe. I know wot you mean about the rear pass side one!!
As the other posts will show, move the wiring loom etc out of the way. What the haynes manual didn't mention is if you remove the rubber seal at the pollen filter, the centre part of the pollen filter/wiper area moves up & gives you more access.

Sorry for the poor description, perhaps others can fill in the proper names for the panels
