GEAR KNOB
« on: 07 November 2007, 17:35:25 »

Does any one have any experiance of removing the original gear knob on a pre face lift 97, as i have an irmscher wood one to fit and it does not appear to twist off. is it held on by some kind of clip or screw? ::)

Hi Gary
I have some bad news. They only fit the Mini-facelift so you will have to sell it to me :D

Hi, not sure if Vx ever changed their method of fitting but I changed a couple on a Cavalier & Astra i has some years ago when rep[lacing ther worn gaiter. They were press fitted onto the emd of the lever shaft meaning you had to cut the old one off & replace the knob & gaiter together. I cannot say if the Omega is different I am afraid. For what its worth Rover used to screw fit theirs, try & see if it twists anti-clockwise. If it does'nt budge i would say they were press fitted on these as well.
I would be curious as to how an auto box knob is removed btw if anyone has done this previously

I had a feeling that this was not going to be easy, push on means a bugger to get off so i will get to the breakers on sat to see if cutting the thing off causes any probs also the irmscher one is held on by a coller held in place by 3 grub screws and then screws on to the coller

Would it not be easier to replace the complete gear lever?

Problem there guys, is that the wood gear knob is sitting infront of me having never been fitted to a car. so what ever happens a knob has to be removed somewhere along the line. ;)

I will try that method on sat morning on the breaker i have in my garage. If it does not prove to be 100% and looks a bit naff then it could well be heading to cheshire. will keep you informed pete. :o
