Fuel Problem
« on: 11 November 2007, 10:34:49 »

I have what appears to be an intermittant fuel problem when starting the car. The car starts no problem and ticks over fine (600 RPM). Fuel comsumpsion says 0.3.

Now not always but some times I put it into Drive and when accelorate fuel comsumption goes to 999 and I have no power car just judders along.

Switch off ignition start again and it goes ok. I have had a full service, replacer the fuel filter twice but now at my wits end, it has been on a Tech 2 and nothing. When running the car is great.

Any ideas before the wife gets her way and I have to get rid off it.

When it does it, do you have power at the fuel pump in the boot? If not poss a pink relay (in box under bonnet).

Do you get EML when giving it "the beans" ?

I take it I do have power as it only happens in drive,  when back in nutral it ticks over fine (fuel comsumpsion goes back to 0.3)

Sorry but EML? :-/

The 999 is the give-away - the engine management thinks its on overrun, and cuts the injectors.  I'd be checking TPS, though anyone handy with a Tech2 should have picked that up.

TPS - Throttle Position Sensor.  Mounted on throttle body on 2.5/3.0.  Should be measurable with a meter

Measure it first, before getting replacement! That is not the only thing that could cause that problem!!

Garage have had the car three days, said relay and TPS are fine and they could not find a problem. Just gone out and guess what? yes it did it again. Switched engine off restarted and off we went no problem. Took it back to garage they took it out nothing. That is how intermittent it is. Any other ideas please? running out of money now.

Couldn't be something like a brake pedal switch? ECU thinks it's fighting the brakes so cuts power? I agree TPS would have been favourite. Sounds just like the ECU going into overrun cut. Could be an intermittent connection on the TPS. Did they check it that thoroughly?

What else? :-/
