tappets
« on: 22 December 2007, 17:34:56 »

The project Elite makes some nasty tappet noises, did 200 miles today of hard running with some proffsional tappet lifter treatment in there, so good its not available to the public!

But the noise is still there  >:(

Is it the actual tappet that fails, does it need to be replaced or just cleaned?

If i stripped down to the tappets, and cleaned each one in turn very well with carb cleaner and alike, would it solve my problem or do i need new ones?

Could it be an oil pressure problem?

I think the oil pressure is ok (having seen and driven this car)... the noise seems localised to a couple of lifters.

I recon the springs in them have failed Tunnie...

(Ps, see my other post in gen chat).

Its defo tappets  :(

Now my understanding is you cannot change tappets for second hand ones cause they get worn to be spefic to that hole, as if you jumble them up it can sound awful?

I'd be happy to have a go at replacing the springs, that £150 V6, you still got the engine from it? The springs for the tappets should do nicely??

Start by taking them out one by one, noting their location, and follow mark's guide for testing and servicing them.

You'll soon find the duff ones. They are the only ones you need to replace with new ones. :y

If its more than the lifters (only need to take cam off), I think you have to remove the head.

What do you think it could be other than the lifters Jaime?

Just out of interest - it sounds very lifter like to me...

You want to keep them on the same cam lobes if you're reassembling them. I wouldn't say second hand ones are a no-no if they're known to be OK and aren't worn. I don't believe the bores are the issue, It's the fact that the cam lobes and lifters have bedded in together. If one goes faulty you have to replace it anyway, so, new or second hand, it won't match the cam lobe.

Might be worth sourcing a few known good ones just in case then cleaning them out, replacing any that don't respond.

Does sound like lifters.  But knowing Tunnies luck, could be weak spring or valve...

If so, I'm happy to help rebuild the heads - when it's warmer!

Mine has a bit of tappet noise as well, so i'm doing 3K oil changes at the moment but will follow this thead with interest!

The car has done 63K and had standard service intervals up to when I bought it at 56K (so only two services according to book). I have just changed the oil again today having done it once before at 60K.
