Must Be The Crank Sensor I Hope
« on: 23 December 2007, 12:23:44 »

Right Put All the cambelt cover back on and the Aux Belt and started her up no problem no EML on and seem to run really well.

Checked as asked by the Boy the voltage over the battery and it was about 11.5 volts as i am using a neddle voltmeter not a digital one

once the engine was runnning i checked the voltage again over the battery and it was 13.5 volts then checked the battery with the engine off and it was 12 volts so i think the battery is fine and so is the alternator.

I have heard the Crank sensor is more prone to fail when the engine is hot so i am taking this as the crank sensor is the duff one as on EML when it was cold, ill be taking her out in a bit for a run but if the crank sensor has failed once i am not chancing a 250 mile drive with it so ill get a new one tomorrow.

I dont think the MAF is knack as Eilte Pete said in my other post as it would flag up code 0100 and it has not.

Does everyone think its the Crank sensor and not the Cam Sensor ?

[Edit] Dave C i dont think its the ECU as i would have loads of problems and its the first time its died and now no EML it has to be a iffy sensor

Got one in my work that cuts out say after 5 miles or when it hets warm and thats crank sensor gone down so i'd just re[place urs bud to be on the safe side..
Al your voltages seam fine bud, just what i'd expect from a healthy charge system..

I am going to get a new one tomorrow if most people on here think its the crank sensor over the cam which i now think it is.

With the EML light off now for no reason apart from its cold i guess it will rev well past the 4.5 rpm that is was stopping at yesterday

But The engine Warmed Up the EML came back on and it will not rev past 4.5 now so it must be a knacked Crank Sensor

Anyone agree ?

just had the crank sensor changed on mine after it refused to tickover ,when easing off the throttle the revs would die and cut out, as its an auto -not nice to free wheel running ok now except for the coolant leak that has since developed

I don't agree with replacing without a v good reason to believe it's Duff, but a crank sensor on yours is about £12, so it's worth just changing them both with eBay jobs, even if just for futureproofing, IMO

If this happened at any other time of year i would buy them from ebay

In my experience duff crank sensor causes starting probs......it will start but struggles and engine is in limp mode
Same symptons as a duff cam sensor.

As TB pointed out both sensors knackered will cause it to cut out and refuse to start.

So its either one of them or both (unlikely to go at the same time tho)

Not much help im afraid.  :-[

You checked the voltage with engine off and at idle.

Whats the voltage when revved? If its more than 14.5v I would say thats the cause
